Fastest supercomputer…
Ok ok… I know this news is about 1 month+ old already but the fastest supercomputer is current IBM’s Roadrunner.
Hang on… If it is not fast than your average desktop then why will it be called a supercomputer in the first place?
Well… The reason why IBM Roadrunner is featured right here on our blog is because… the Roadrunner is built using the very same processor running YOUR PS3 but slightly enhanced version of it.
Besides using the Cell, AMD’s Opteron CPU are also used in collaboration with the Cell CPU.
From what I can gather is that, the Opteron CPU is used to handle the operating system while the Cell CPU is used to perform calculations!

IIRC, there was a news report back in 2003 (Maybe earlier or later) tt the CPU of the PS2 is used in ballistic missile due to its’ superior image processing or something like tt.
Also, US banned the sales of PS2 to Iraq due to such concern.
Cant remember the details clearly though…
